Leytonstone Community Fridge

The Community Fridge has been a Transition Leytonstone project since 2018. The main aim of the Fridge project is to rescue good quality surplus food that would otherwise have been consigned to the waste stream. Most food donations come from a range of local businesses of all sizes, and from individuals. The range of foods is culturally diverse and includes bakery, ambient, fresh produce, drinks and chilled items, including meat, dairy and vegan. Visitors do not need referrals, and there is no charge for the food, although financial contributions are always appreciated.

None of the food offered to visitors has been purchased by the Fridge, unlike conventional food banks. Also unlike food banks, the Fridge accepts donations of ambient food that is over the Best Before date. Best Before is safe to eat unlike Use By, although quality may be slightly impaired. See the Food Standards Agency information.

The Fridge is a member of the Hubbub Community Fridge Network. So far over 500 Community Fridges have been set up across the UK, helping thousands connect to their communities, whilst accessing nutritious food and reducing waste.
