Jo and Kesi

This small shop, managed by Antoinette, sells a surprisingly wide range of beautifully crafted and carefully chosen items. These include handmade clothes, cushions, bags and baskets, as well as toys, jewellery, glassware, skincare products and greeting cards. The avoidance of waste is engrained in the culture of this shop. Fabric left over from larger items of clothing or bags is used to make scrunchies and purses. Items made from recycled materials include scarves and beanies (from plastic bottles), glassware and jewellery. Antoinette started her own small label of bags, cushions and clothing items years ago. These are all made in very small batches in East London. Any of her designs can be returned to be fixed, strengthened, shortened...and has a lifelong guarantee. (if possible !) No plastic bags are used; items are placed in paper bags, or wrapped in acid free tissue paper. The small range of toys are made from organic materials. Antoinette makes the clothing items, cushions and bags herself. Many other items are sourced from small businesses in London, and some, including greeting cards and skincare products, from Leytonstone. Local communities much further afield are also supported; for example women in Ghana who hand weave the baskets. All members of staff live locally and walk to work. Jo and Kesi is more than just a shop; this local business has a social and community role as well. Antoinette supports trusted local businesses and services by posting their leaflets in the window, These include services for young parents and babies, and garden design. The shop takes part in Waltham Forest Secret Santa, a scheme that gives presents to women and children in hostels. One of the shop’s suppliers works with a charity for refugees.
